Animal Welfare Standards - PigsThe Animal Welfare (Pigs) Regulations 2013 commenced on 1 July 2013.
These Regulations legislates most of the standards contained in the Model Code of Practice for the Welfare of Animals - Pigs, Third edition and make them legally enforceable. Most of the Regulations apply to all persons who keep pigs (not just commercial producers).
Note that in Tasmania, standard 4.1.5 of the Code does not apply and the confinement of sows in stalls is prohibited except in the following circumstances:
Note also that there are mandatory record-keeping requirements in relation to the use of sow stalls.
Persons keeping pigs should refer to the Regulations in order to determine their responsibilities under the law.
