Commercial Fishing Seasons

Fish illustration by Peter GouldthorpeCommercial fishing seasons in Tasmania exist for species including southern rock lobster (also referred to as crayfish), squid and calamari, scallops, striped trumpeter, garfish, giant crab and banded morwong. These fisheries may be closed for fisheries management reasons such as limiting the total catch for a fishery or at times corresponding to spawning for some species to protect breeding stock. As spawning times can change from year to year, so can the open or closed season.

If not listed, no commercial fishing season applies in Tasmania. For changes to published fishing seasons, look for public notices in major Tasmanian newspapers, check this page or call the Department switchboard on 1300 368 550.
