Review of the Animal Welfare Act


The Animal Welfare Advisory Committee worked with the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment to review the Animal Welfare Act (the Act).

The Committee sought public comment on over a range of proposed changes to the Act which were outlined in a Discussion Paper. The Committee also invited comment on the adequacy of penalties for offences under the Act.

The period for public comments ran from 17 August 2012 until 16 November 2012.

Submissions received are treated as public documents and made available on the Agency's website, unless prior contact has been made with the Committee's Executive Officer.

On Wednesday 5 June 2013, Deputy Premier Bryan Green announced that he has accepted the Committee’s recommendations and expects to introduce legislation to Parliament before the end of the year to bring the recommendations into effect.
