Plant Diseases

The Tasmanian Plant Disease Diagnostic Service is delivered by the Plant Health Branch, located at New Town Laboratories near Hobart. The Service provides identification of the causes of plant death or stunting in plants of agricultural, ornamental or environmental significance. Clients include industry, private individuals and Quarantine authorities.

It can provide identification of plant diseases caused by agents such as fungi, bacteria and viruses; other services include testing of seeds for plant pathogens and certification of disease freedom for Quarantine purposes. Most services offered by the Diagnostic Service attract a fee. Details of these are available from the relevant contact below.

WSMV is an important disease of wheat and recent testing by DPIW has confirmed its presence in Tasmania.
Potato Virus Testing
Three potato diseases - Virus S, Virus X and Leaf Roll Virus - have been detected at low levels in a small number of Tasmanian seed potato crops.
