Foxes in Tasmania

An accumulation of physical evidence indicates that an unknown number of European Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are present in Tasmania and threaten the state's wildlife, agriculture, tourism and economy. These elusive, adaptable and deadly predators are recognised nationally as the single most devastating introduced pest and threat to Australia's native wildlife, and it would be an unmitigated disaster if they were allowed to establish in Tasmania.

The Fox Eradication Branch has been established by the Tasmanian Government (with joint funding from the Commonwealth Government) to undertake an integrated eradication program to rid Tasmania of foxes, study native wildlife most at risk from foxes and reduce any future risk of fox incursions into the state.

The public is urged to take seriously the threat which foxes pose to Tasmania, and to support the fox eradication effort by reporting fox sightings and any evidence of fox activity (eg. unusual footprints, possible den sites, suspicious stock kills) to the FOX HOTLINE: 1300 FOX OUT (1300 369 688)

Media News: Feral Peril, an award-winning documentary featuring the work of the Fox Eradication Branch, will be broadcast on ABC1 (in Australia) on Thursday 16 July at 8.30pm.
