Water Management Plans

The Water Management Act 1999 provides for the development of Water Management Plans. Water Management Plans are developed in consultation with stakeholders to ensure the sustainable development and management of a water resource.

A Water Management Plan is generally implemented by the Department of Primary Industries and Water. However, the Minister for Primary Industries and Water may approve an application by a Water Entity to take over the implementation of the Plan.

Draft Water Management Plans
Draft Water Management Plans are being prepared for catchments around the state.
Great Forester Water Management Plan
The Great Forester WMP is Tasmania’s first WMP prepared under the Water Management Act 1999. The Plan took effect on 13 August 2003.
Mersey Water Management Plan
The Mersey Water Management Plan is Tasmania's second Water Management Plan. The Plan took effect on 31 August 2005.
Lakes Sorell and Crescent Water Management Plan
The Lakes Sorell and Crescent Water Management Plan took effect on 30 November 2005.
River Clyde Water Management Plan
The River Clyde Water Management Plan took effect on 30 November 2005.
Little Swanport Water Management Plan
The Little Swanport WMP is Tasmania's fifth Water Management Plan. It took effect on 26 July 2006.
Ansons Water Management Plan
The Ansons River Catchment Water Management Plan has been prepared under the WMA 1999. The Plan took effect on 7 July 2010.
Sassafras Wesley Vale WMP
The Sassafras Wesley Vale Water Management Plan was adopted on 27 January 2012 and will take effect prior to the 2012-13 irrigation season.
Boobyalla Water Management Plan
The Boobyalla River Catchment Water Management Plan was adopted by the Minister for Primary Industries and Water on 11 April 2012.
Tomahawk Water Management Plan
The Tomahawk River Catchment Water Management Plan was adopted by the Minister for Primary Industries and Water on 11 April 2012.

Standard Operating Procedures for the Development of Statutory Water Management Plans in Tasmania have been developed to assist current and new water management planners.

Generic Principles for Water Management Planning have been developed to assist stakeholders to better understand the water management planning process.
