Fishcare logoFishcare volunteer with small child.Who can become a Fishcare Volunteer?

Volunteers should have a keen interest in fish or fishing and both the marine and freshwater environment. People with a willingness to share both their time and enthusiasm should apply to ensure that we all Fish for the future . Men and women are encouraged to apply and the minimum age is 16.

How much time will I need to commit to being a Fishcare Volunteer?

Three to four hours once a month will usually be required by each Volunteer, however times will be flexible depending on the circumstances.

What training will be provided?

The Department will conduct a two to three day training course from time to time which will prepare all Volunteers to act on behalf of the Fishcare program. Topics covered include fisheries management, fish identification and communications skills.

Do Volunteers act in an enforcement role?

No. Volunteers act purely in an education and research role only.

How has the Fishcare program been received?

This program has been a success both in Tasmania and other states. Fishcare Volunteers have been influential in ensuring locals and visitors to their region are aware of the regulations. The education role the Volunteers play has seen a noticeable decrease in fisheries-related offences.
