Graphic of shells and fish. The State Government is committed to ensuring the long-term ecological viability of Tasmania's marine environment, and the protection of its biodiversity. (See information on Tasmania's Marine Reserves on the Tasmanian Parks & Wildlife Service website.)

The Marine Protected Areas Strategy was developed through an extensive period of consultation.

A draft strategy was released for public comment attracting more than a thousand submissions. The strategy was refined in the light of the comments. The Government then signed off on a strategy for establishing a system of Marine Protected Areas in Tasmania - the Tasmanian Marine Protected Areas Strategy.

To assist with the preparation of the strategy the Department, in conjunction with the Marine and Marine Industries Council, prepared a Background Report.

During the development of the Tasmanian Marine Protected Areas Strategy released in 2001, the issue of displacement and compensation was considered by representatives from the Tasmanian Fishing Industry Council and the Departments of Primary Industries, Water and Environment, Premier and Cabinet, and Treasury and Finance.

The resulting Displacement Assessment Process was approved by (then) Primary Industries Minister, David Llewellyn, in October 2007.

Those individuals who may be affected by the declaration of Marine Protected Areas should therefore read this policy which sets out the process for providing adjustment assistance.
