| Would you like to boost profits of your business through lifting the amount of pasture utilised on your farm?
Or are you looking to improve your skills to take your business to the next level?
The Tasmanian Dairy Industry has moved into a new era of services offered to farmers to assist their business. This will be through the new and exciting program, Pasture Plu$, which commenced 1 November 2005.
Pasture Plu$ aims to help dairy farmers address the factors that limit their business from achieving a higher profitable return. Farmers can look out for a range of activities to be delivered in the areas of Pasture, Business, Nutrition, Labour and Environment. It’s a matter then, for you to decide what your business needs next, to drive your profit further.
With skill development being the greatest driver of farm profit, each of the activities will be designed to provide you with the greatest opportunity to develop those skills.
Dairy Tas and Dairy Australia are funding the Pasture Plu$ program over the next three years. This means the Pasture Plu$ program is funded by dairy farmers' levies for dairy farmers. The Tasmanian Institute of Agricultural Research (TIAR) is also supporting the project. This program will be replacing the well-known and successful Targeting Our Profitability program.
The team working on Pasture Plu$ is Team Leader of Dairy Advisory & Information Services, Rob La Grange, and Project Officer, Chris Haynes.

Ever wondered how much pasture has been utilised on your farm this season? Or whether you will reach the target utilisation you have set for the season?
Through the Pasture Plu$ program there is a service which is offered to calculate pasture utilisation at any point during the season and track it over time. View the Pasture Plu$ Pasture Utilisation Calculator website .
Also available on this website are monthly updates of the farmlets at Elliott Research and Demonstration Station. This will allow you to see how each farmlet is tracking, particularly the farmlets with the goals of 20tDM/ha on irrigated and 12tDM/ha on dryland.
Focus Farms have been set up to demonstrate how to capture profit from increased pasture utilisation, as well as investigate the application of increasing pasture utilisation through management on a dairy farm.
Find out more about the three Pasture Plu$ Focus Farms around the State.
The Pasture Plu$ program facilitates two-day workshops covering topics such as pasture management, soils and fertilisers, business planning and dairy cow nutrition. The pasture management workshop is followed by the option of joining a 'coached' pasture management group in your region. The coached groups meet on-farm 12 times over 18 months and address the seasonal changes required for efficient pasture management practice. Contact Liz Mann or Rob La Grange on 1300 368 550 for further information.
The Pasture Plu$ Program finished in November 2008. A copy of the Final Report is below.
