Requirements for Importing Animals to Tasmania
Background
General and Special Authorities to Import AnimalsSee also:
Import/Export Permit of Wildlife
Under the Animal Health Act 1995 all imports of animals, disease agents, and restricted materials must be authorised by either a special or general authority.
If there is no authority on this site, the animal, disease agent or restricted material may not be imported.
This requirement covers all animals, and an 'animal' is defined as any member of the animal kingdom except humans. Eggs, semen, carcasses, and parts of carcasses are included in this definition. A disease agent is any organism capable of causing disease in an animal.
General Authorities are published in the Government Gazette. They apply to all animals and restricted materials of the class specified in the Authority. A General Authority lasts until it is revoked.
Special Authorities are issued by the Chief Veterinary Officer after the importer has applied in writing for an Authority. Special Authorities can apply to particular animals or restricted materials, or to a specified class of animals or restricted materials. An application fee will be charged.
If any import conditions are specified by a General or Special Authority, the animals and their certification must be presented for inspection on arrival in Tasmania. A fee will be charged for this inspection.
The Animal Health Act 1995 does not replace import controls enacted under other Tasmanian or Commonwealth legislation.
Animal Welfare - Animal Welfare requirements for the transport of livestock across Bass Strait are covered in the Animal Welfare Guideline - Transport of Livestock Across Bass Strait.
The General Authority for Animal Imports has been reproduced as a series of web pages on this site and includes the necessary certificates and forms, see the table of contents below.
