Soil Maps of Tasmania

The Reconnaissance Soil Maps of Tasmania

Over a 27 year period (1940 - 1967), the CSIRO Division of Soils, Adelaide undertook a series of reconnaissance (small scale) soil surveys and some more detailed (large scale) soil surveys of the agricultural land in Tasmania. These maps and reports form the basis of our current knowledge and understanding of the distribution and types of soils within Tasmania. However, until recently most of this information was out of print and of limited availability, the terminology was dated and inconsistencies in map units existed across map sheets.

In response to increasing demand for soil information, and to add value to the existing Reconnaissance maps, the then Department of Primary Industries, Water and Environment (DPIWE) and the Natural Heritage Trust, put together a project to correlate, update and reprint the Reconnaissance soil maps and reports.

The majority of the Reconnaissance soil maps have now been updated and reprinted and are available from Service Tasmania shopfronts. The other soil maps including the more detailed surveys may be accessed through the DPIPWE libraries at Mt Pleasant laboratories (Launceston) or New Town offices (Hobart). The revised soil maps are also available digitally as clickable maps through the DPIPWE LISTYou are now leaving our site.
