Download the Recreational Sea Fishing Guide 2009-10

Rule changes come into effect on 1 November 2009

Scalefish Rule Changes

A major review of the scalefish management plan was conducted during 2009. Changes include the introduction of a licence for recreational set lines and new gillnet soak times. There are also changes to possession limits for striped trumpeter, blue eye trevalla, yellowtail kingfish, snapper and calamari and to some size limits.

Rock Lobster Review

A review of the rock lobster management plan is being conducted during 2009-10. Interested fishers can have their say about the rock lobster fishery following the release of public consultation papers or at public meetings held around the State. To stay informed register for our email updates.

Changes to Research Area Boundaries

The northern boundary of the Elephant Rock Research Area has been extended. There is no fishing by diving or use of rock lobster pots or rings in this area. The southern boundary of the Swan Island Research Area has also changed. There is no taking of any fish by diving within 500 metres of the high water mark in this research area.

REDMAP

Redmap is an exciting new interactive website where recreational fishers can enter data about fish species which may be shifting habitat or extending beyond their usual range. If you catch a fish not usually found in your favourite spot, go to www.redmap.org.au to tell their marine scientists about it.

Bruny Bioregion MPAs

In 2008, the Tasmanian Government announced the creation of 14 new marine protected areas in the Bruny Bioregion. These were declared multiple use MPAs and no new fishing restrictions apply. However, the existing marine nature reserves at Tinderbox and Ninepin Point have been extended and current no take fishing restrictions apply in these areas. More information about the Bruny Bioregion can be found at: www.parks.tas.gov.au

Scallop Season Changes

There will be a limited scallop season in the D’Entrecasteaux Channel from 1 – 31 July 2010 with a minimum size limit of 110mm for commercial and queen scallops. All other State waters will be open for the 2010 scallop season.

Fishery Closures

The date for the southern calamari closure has changed. Details of this and other closures.
