SMART Farming Initiative

SMART Farming - Sustainable Management of Agricultural Resources in Tasmania

SMART Farming is a key policy, released in March 2006, for the Tasmanian primary industry sector. SMART Farming recognises that an innovative, competitive and sustainable primary industry sector is vital to Tasmania’s long-term economic development.

There are eight key initiatives in SMART Farming:
    1. Reinvestment in Agricultural Research Centres at Forthside and Elliott.
    2. Helping SMART Farmers through increasing their knowledge in business and farming skills, giving them the ability to improve their economic and environmental performance. This includes the development of the FarmPoint website, a one-stop shop for information on farming in Tasmania.
    3. Promoting SMART Farming Practices by Government working with the farming sector on a number of quality assurance, environmental management systems, marketing and value chain management programs.
    4. Supporting SMART Farming through biosecurity measures, research and development, and marketing and promotion activities.
    5. Protecting Tasmania’s Biosecurity through key activities including increased funding to check containers entering Tasmania, additional quarantine officers and extra testing of imported seeds and grains.
    6. Helping our Young Farmers by introducing an interest rate rebate to commercial farm loans to support and encourage young Tasmanians to become farmers.
    7. Supporting our School FarmsYou are now leaving our site. DPIWE is not responsible for the content of the web site to which you are going. The link does not constitute any form of endorsement through providing extra funding in recognition that they are important to rural communities and provide pathways to further employment and training in the agricultural sector.(www.education.tas.gov.au/school/educators/resources/schoolfarms)
    8. Further developing Tasmania’s fishing industries by support to the Fisheries Research and Development CorporationYou are now leaving our site. Projects addressing these key initiatives will be developed and delivered by working with industry through a consultative process with industry leaders. This process of extended collaboration will allow for further alignment between Government and industry to build the prosperity and sustainability of Tasmania.
