Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals

State legislation controls the use of agricultural and veterinary chemicals in Tasmania. This legislation is administered by the Chemical Management Branch, Biosecurity and Product Integrity Division within the Department.

The Chemical Management Branch is responsible for the oversight of agricultural and veterinary chemical issues. It administers legislation to control the use of agricultural and veterinary chemicals, applies fertiliser standards and regulates animal identification systems. The Branch also administers the licensing of commercial spray contractors and operators, authorises the use of certain restricted products, coordinates residue surveillance and management programs and liaises with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) to provide product compliance and enforcement activities.

Further responsibilities include the investigation of spraying complaints and incidents, provision of vertebrate pest control programs and the development and implementation of strategies to reduce reliance on the use of chemicals in Tasmanian agriculture.
