Review of the Animal Welfare Act


    The period for public comments has now closed.


    The Animal Welfare Advisory Committee is working with the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment to review the Animal Welfare Act (the Act).

    The Committee sought public comment on over 20 proposed changes to the Act which are outlined in the Discussion Paper below. The Committee also invited comment on the adequacy of penalties for offences under the Act.

    The period for public comments ran from 17 August 2012 until 16 November 2012.

    Submissions received are treated as public documents and made available on the Agency's website, unless prior contact has been made with the Committee's Executive Officer concerning confidential content. Submissions will be posted on the Department's website as soon as they can be processed.

    All submissions will be considered when reporting to the Minister for Primary Industries and Water and in the development of recommendations for the Minister. The Committee anticipates providing their recommendations to the Minister in early 2013.
