Fox - Up close and personal

Schools Program

As part of the Fox Eradication Program’s effort to promote awareness and understanding of the fox issue in Tasmania, a schools program has been developed targeting students from grades 3-10. This FREE program is linked to the Tasmanian curriculum and offers informative multimedia presentations with hands-on activities for students, and curriculum links and lesson ideas for teachers. Presentations are available to all schools statewide.

The objectives of this program are to provide students and teachers with a better understanding of:
  • The fox issue in Tasmania;
  • Fox biology, behaviour and ecology;
  • Potential impacts of foxes in Tasmania;
  • What to do if a fox is seen or possible evidence of activity is found; and,
  • Activities of the Fox Eradication Program.
In addition, teacher professional development sessions for both in-service and student teachers are also available. As teachers, you can all help educate students about the potential impacts foxes would have in Tasmania and how to help make Tasmania fox free.

All teachers who receive a school visit will be provided with explanation of how to use our multimedia resource package, FERP! (the Fox Education Resource Package), which is due for release in August. This multimedia package will contain a wide variety of resources, information brochures and supporting documents to help incorporate the fox issue into your teaching programs.

The Fox Eradication Program can provide the following for Tasmanian teachers and students:
  • Classroom presentations (approximately 1 hour duration) for grades 3-10;
  • Teacher professional development workshops;
  • Teacher resource packs;
  • FERP, a multimedia resource package (available August 2009);
  • Information resources; and,
  • Field tours and experiential learning opportunities for teachers.
Opportunities to participate in the program are limited so please book early to avoid disappointment. Please note, all school visits will be confirmed through a confirmation notice via email or post.

This program will have interest and relevance for teachers and students at primary and secondary levels.

Schools Competition

As part of our schools program, we are running a statewide schools competition open to all Tasmanian school students in grades 3-10. Applicants must design a poster promoting a 'Fox Free Tasmania'. Posters should be aimed at the general Tasmanian public. Group entries are welcome.

The Fox Eradication Program is looking for applicants who display originality and creativity within their entries. Selected work will be published on the DPIPWE website along with the name of the student and their school.

The Fox Eradication Program is inviting all schools to help get behind the fox eradication effort and show their support. Teachers, please ensure all student names, grade and school are supplied with entries.

Community Presentations

Fox in Victoria.

The Fox Eradication Program offers presentations to interested community groups and clubs to provide an update on the latest fox evidence and activities of the Fox Eradication Program. Speakers are available statewide and provide a range of information and resources during presentations.

We especially encourage all groups that are involved in outdoor activities in Tasmania (eg. fishermen, bushwalkers, hunters, naturalists, photographers) to organise a fox awareness presentation. These presentations provide detailed information about identifying foxes and signs of their activity. It is only with the support of a vigilant community that the fox eradication effort in Tasmania will be successful.

To enquire about organising a talk for your group, please contact Matthew Marrison, Community Engagement Section Leader, on 03 6336 5426 or email Matthew.Marrison@dpipwe.tas.gov.au
