Why review the Crown Lands Act?
The Crown Lands Act 1976 is now over 30 years old and was written for a different set of circumstances and a different environment than exists today. Today there is a much greater sense of meeting public and community needs, with public land being viewed as an asset for the public benefit and enjoyment of future generations.
The existing legislation does not provide a policy framework to enable strategic and pro-active management of public land in Tasmania.
Over the past 30 years, other changes have occurred in Government administration with a general recognition that the public sector should meet the public demand for open, accountable and transparent decision making within Government agencies. The new act will also aim to improve delivery of Government services by reducing red tape and allowing the streamlining of administrative processes.
Project outcomes
The project will review the Crown Lands Act 1976 and prepare new legislation for the administration and management of Crown land in Tasmania. New legislation will seek to deliver:
