Certificate of Competency for the Laying of 1080 Baits

Commercial Operator Licences

Contractors, which could include Forestry Tasmania or private forest companies, who intend to lay 1080 baits on land owned by another person or company for fee or reward must hold a Commercial Operator Licence.

Each person laying 1080 baits for the contractor must hold a provisional or full Category 2 Chemical User Certificate of Competency issued by the Registrar of Chemical Products.

If either partner in a joint venture uses 1080 on land on which a forest plantation is being established under that joint venture, a Commercial Operator Licence is not required to be held by either partner.

Certificates of Competency

People who are employed by a Commercial Operator to lay 1080 baits must either hold a current Category 2 Chemical User Certificate Of Competency, or a current provisional Certificate of Competency. A provisional certificate may only be issued for a limited period (usually a maximum of 6 to 12 months) until the applicant completes the Wild Animal Management 1080 bait layers course.

Certificates are issued as follows:
  • a full Category 2 Chemical User Certificate of Competency may be issued only after the applicant has completed a 1080 bait layers training day conducted by Wild Animal Management (WAM), DPIPWE and only after a satisfactory on-the-job assessment of the applicant's ability to use 1080 safely and effectively is made by a WAM Officer.
  • a provisional Category 2 Chemical User Certificate of Competency may be issued to an applicant only after a satisfactory on-the-job assessment of the applicant’s ability to use 1080 baits safely and effectively is made by a WAM Officer and on the condition that a DPIPWE 1080 bait layers training course is completed as soon as possible.
