Review of Wildlife Import Arrangements

In August 2009 the then Minister imposed a moratorium on the importation of wildlife until a review of wildlife import arrangements was completed. In late 2010 the consultancy EcoLogical Australia finalised its Review of Tasmania’s Wildlife Import Legislation, Regulations and Processes. The review outlined four options for managing wildlife imports into Tasmania. The Department has put in place procedures to implement option four of the review.

The new arrangements include lists of wildlife that can be imported into Tasmania with limited restrictions, wildlife that can be imported provided a number of conditions are met, and wildlife that cannot be imported under any circumstances into the State. The new arrangements also include a process to assess wildlife that are not included on any of the lists to determine whether the wildlife can be imported, and the conditions, if any, that should apply. These requirements will ensure that the proposed imports do not represent an unacceptable risk to Tasmania’s social, economic and environmental prosperity.
