The Alternatives to 1080 Program

In 2005 the Australian and Tasmanian Governments agreed to work on a joint program to accelerate research into, and implementation of, alternative strategies for browsing animal control on private forest and agricultural lands.

Under this agreement, the Australian Government provided $4 million to fund a research, field testing and demonstration program to provide alternative options for private landholders, and work with the State in the light of these results to continue to reduce the usage of 1080 on private lands.

The program finished in June 2010. A final report was prepared for the Minister and released in early May 2011. It outlines the range of tools and strategies identified as viable alternatives to 1080 poison in Tasmania.
